Letter: Hope for political settlement soon

Why would they want to send American troops to die on the European continent again? The EU is richer than the U.S., yet we are paying 80 percent of the cost of the war against Yugoslavia. The EU countries spend far less proportionately on their defense than we do because we provide their defense and have for 54 years.

NATO has plans to expand membership to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. This will reignite the cold war with Russia. If you like the war in Yugoslavia, you'll love the future "humanitarian" wars that your children and grandchildren and mine will fight in the name of NATO and the U.N.

We should all wish for a political settlement now that disregards President Clinton's legacy and NATO's reputation.
