Del Papa to announce Senate bid

Tuesday, June 1, 1999 | 2:07 a.m.

Del Papa scheduled new conferences in Las Vegas and Reno. U.S. Sens. Harry Reid and Richard Bryan, both D-Nev., are expected to attend.

Del Papa, 49, who backed out of a bid for governor last year, already has filed the Federal Election Commission paperwork needed to launch her bid for the seat Bryan is vacating.

She's the first Democrat to formally file a declaration of candidacy. But others have been considering the idea, including Las Vegas lawyer Ed Bernstein, Las Vegas Sun Editor Brian Greenspun and Polo Towers executive Steve Cloobeck.

If Del Papa emerges as the Democratic nominee, her likely Republican opponents would be either former Rep. John Ensign or Rep. Jim Gibbons.

Ensign already has said he's running for the Senate seat in 2000. He narrowly lost a race to Reid last year. Gibbons hasn't spelled out his plans yet.
