Congressional representatives push for airport

Tuesday, June 1, 1999 | 2:12 a.m.

The plan would allow Clark County to buy 6,000 acres of federal land near Jean, Nev.

Officials are concerned that McCarran International Airport will eventually be overwhelmed by travelers and a second airport will be needed.

Lawmakers have reintroduced bills that would lay the groundwork for the airport on a dry lake bed along Interstate 15.

Similar legislation died in Congress last year when it was opposed by environmental groups. Environmentalists are concerned because the site is located near the Mojave National Preserve.
