Letter: Flag burners only hurt themselves, not rest of U.S.
Thursday, July 29, 1999 | 9:59 a.m.
I don't feel that flag burning serves a useful purpose, and most people who choose to partake in it need to visit other countries to see how good they have it here.
However, I don't think this subject is worthy of all the attention it is getting.
I suppose many people feel it is their duty to persecute those "flag burners" to show their patriotism toward the United States. This is a token gesture that is only good for topics of discussion at the water cooler in the workplace.
If you want to show that you really love your country, do things that really count. Stop buying cheap, imported products that were manufactured overseas by child labor. Buy American even if it costs more.
Take pride in your community and your home. Mow your lawn and donate your old clothes to charity. It is most important to vote.
Pay no mind to these "flag-burning," so-called Americans. They should be treated like rebellious teenagers who commit outrageous acts just to get a reaction out of people.
Ignore them, as they really aren't hurting anything or anyone but themselves. They aren't allowing themselves to enjoy the most wonderful country in the world to live in.
