Event to celebrate park's renovation

Joe Shoong Park, 1503 Wesley St., near Charleston and Nellis boulevards, will be rededicated with a "Summer Celebration" 8-10 a.m. Saturday. This five-acre neighborhood park recently underwent a $370,000 renovation and improvement project. A free pancake breakfast will be served, and there will be water games for children, a DJ for entertainment, contests and prizes. Call 455-8200.

Group to honor new councilwoman

The Professional Black Women's Alliance will salute new City Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Hop, 1650 E. Tropicana Ave.

Course to be given at senior center

Basic CPR Training will be offered 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday by the Senior Advantage Resource Center, 9310 Sun City Blvd., Suite No. 101. This program is for adults 50 and over. Call 363-1150.

Software expert to give address

Julie Altstatt of Jasc Software will speak to the Las Vegas PC Users Group at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. Jasc is a leading developer and publisher of graphics and multimedia software, including Paint Shop Pro. Call 263-5910.

Las Vegas Missions Conference planned

Wellspring Church and Christian Center is sponsoring its fourth Las Vegas Missions Conference "Fulfilling The Vision" Aug. 6-8 at 1401 N. Decatur Blvd., Suite No. 13. Class focuses on children's health

"Healthy Choices" will be offered to new parents at 10 a.m. Aug. 5 at the University Medical Center/CCSN Family to Family Connection Center, 1807 W. Charleston Blvd. The free class will cover how food can protect children's health, minimize the risk of infections and reduce their risk of cancer for life. To register call 383-7058.

80 kittens ready to be adopted

The Las Vegas Humane Society has more than 80 kittens available during "Kitten Season." All animals are spayed or neutered before being shown for adoption, have current vaccinations and have a health guarantee. Cats and kittens are also leukemia-tested and given a breakaway collar, tag and carrier to go home in. Call 434-2009.

Amateur competition open to beginners

The International Library of Photography is offering more than $60,000 in prizes will be awarded this year in the International Open Amateur Photography Contest. Photographers, particularly beginners, are welcome to enter the free contest. The deadline is Sept. 15.

Send one photograph in only one of the following categories: people, travel, pets, children, sports, nature, action, humor, portraiture or other. The photo must be a color or black-and-white print unmounted 8x10 or smaller. All entries must include the photographer's name and address on the back, as well as the category and the title of the photo. Book drive to aid library program

A book drive to benefit the library district's Computer Assisted Literacy in Libraries program is being held. Residents can take new and gently used books to Starbucks Coffee stores in Southern Nevada Aug. 1 through Sept. 7, and they will be donated to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. Coloring contest for kids set to begin

Goodwill of Southern Nevada is holding a back-to-school coloring contest for children beginning Sunday. Pick up a coloring sheet at any Goodwill retail location and bring it back colored-in before store closing Aug. 21. On Aug. 22, judges will select the top five drawings from each store.

Goodwill retail stores are located at: 31 N. Nellis Blvd., 3011 N. Rainbow Blvd., 4632 S. Maryland Parkway, and 2560 Duneville near West Sahara Avenue and Jones Boulevard. Goodwill is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide training, employment and job placement services for people with disabilities and other special needs. Call 597-1107, ext. 12.
