One of the victims, Salvadore A. Davalos, 18, of Carson City, was in serious but stable condition at Washoe Medical Center Tuesday night. The other, who was not identified, was treated and released. Both were taken to the hospital by Care Flight helicopter after the 3:30 p.m. shooting.
Officials said a Lake Tahoe couple, Mansfield and Linda Smith of Fallen Leaf Lake, were lucky to be alive after a stray bullet smashed into the windshield of their truck.
Witnesses saw a group of youth arguing in the Taco Bell parking lot at 4050 S. Carson St. Two youths started walking away, but turned and shot into the crowd, said a witness who asked not to be identified.
The two suspects fled in a blue Honda that was later seen driving erratically through town. They were arrested an hour later.
The suspects, Paul Michael Randall and Michael Martin, both of Carson City, were booked into Carson City Jail.
The Smiths were driving south on Carson Street, also known as U.S. 395, when the bullet shattered their windshield.
Mansfield Smith, who turns 70 today, said the bullet struck the windshield directly in front of him.
"I'm a surgeon and I've been in combat, but this is the closest I've ever come to being killed," he said. "If that bullet had penetrated the glass, it would have gone through my right eye."
