Seven applicants eye judicial appointment

Wednesday, July 28, 1999 | 10:56 a.m.

A Las Vegas Municipal Court judge, three prosecutors and three private attorneys have submitted applications for the appointment to replace retiring District Judge Joseph Pavlikowski.

The applicants include Judge On Parraguirre, 40, deputy Clark County district attorneys Abbi Silver, 34, and H. Leon Simon, 61, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Hollingsworth, 44.

The private attorneys seeking the job that pays $100,000 a year are Kenneth Cory, 55, Allan Earl, 57, and William E. Freedman, 70.

Following interviews during the week of Aug. 23, the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection will forward the names of three finalists to Gov. Kenny Guinn for the final appointment.

Before then the Nevada Supreme Court's Administrative Office of the Courts is soliciting written comments "relative to the qualifications of the applicants" for the consideration of the selection commission, according to a news release from Chief Justice Robert Rose.

The comments should be sent to Karen Kavanau, the administrative officer of the courts, Supreme Court Building, 201 South Carson St., Suite 250, Carson City, NV 89701.

The deadline is Aug. 13 and the comments will be confidential, Rose stated.

The selection commission consists of the chief justice, three attorneys appointed by the State Bar Association and three non-lawyers appointed by the governor.

Pavlikowski retired June 30, but is sitting as a senior judge and handling his old caseload until his replacement is named.
