Reno police investigate predawn shots fired

Wednesday, July 28, 1999 | 10:05 a.m.

The incident began around 3:30 a.m., when a resident called police to report shots being fired by at least two men from a hillside between Dandini Boulevard and Clearacre Lane.

Weston said the men were illuminated by moonlight. The responding officer saw them, too, and called for assistance.

"When everybody went up the hill, these guys were gone," Weston said. "It's hard to tell what they were shooting at."

There were no reports of any homes or vehicles being hit by bullets, he said.

The highway was shut down for about two hours while officers searched the area.

Investigators at the scene found 48, .22-caliber cartridges, only 10 of which had not been fired, Weston said. He added that hay bales had been set up, possibly for use as a gun rest.

Weston added that the person who reported the incident told police he heard gunfire the previous two nights as well.

An investigation continued.
