Letter: Ted Kennedy for president

Wednesday, July 28, 1999 | 9:41 a.m.

However, in the television coverage there was a recurring theme. Teddy Kennedy has to claim another body, say another eulogy, and deal with unspeakable grief.

Yes, Chappaquiddick was brought up again and again, although now with the caveat that this was 30 long years ago. Robert Kennedy developed character in the last years of his too-short life. Could not the same thing have happened to Teddy?

The latest poll for president has George W. Bush at 55 percent and Al Gore at 39 percent. I find Bush and Gore equally uninspired and lackluster.

Teddy seems to have acquired the requisite maturity. Even his worst detractors concede he has been a very effective senator. He has given his entire professional life to public service.

If his personal life was once tabloid fodder, so what? Hasn't President Clinton proved we Americans do not expect our public officials to be saints?

If we have to closely examine Teddy's personal life, why not consider those fatherless nieces and nephews to whom he is a much-loved and respected surrogate father.

Why not Ted Kennedy for president?
