Letter: Tax-exempt bonds meant to benefit public, not industry
Wednesday, July 28, 1999 | 9:39 a.m.
As a taxpayer I don't want my tax dollars used to subsidize tax-exempt bonds that benefit private trade shows that aren't even from here. Tax-exempt bonds should be used in support of projects that directly affect the public good such as schools and roads. Tax-exempt bonds are supposed to benefit the people who subsidize them.
While the Las Vegas Convention Center is a public convention center, it is used mostly in support of private shows that come in from out of town. There are a number of private convention facilities in town that compete with the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Allowing the Las Vegas Convention Center to expand using tax-exempt bonds gives them an unfair advantage. In my mind, DeLay's bill is designed to create an even playing field for everyone.
