Bowling competition to aid area children
"Bowl for Kids Sake," an annual fund-raiser to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, will be Aug. 7-8 and Aug. 14-15 at three area bowling centers: The Santa Fe, Sam's Town and The Orleans hotel-casinos.
Interested individuals can form teams of four bowlers to bowl two games the day of the event, and use their highest score. There is a minimum of $100 in pledges per bowler.
Pledge sheets are available at the Big Brothers Big Sister offices, 1785 E. Sahara Ave. Suite A100, or at the offices of sponsor MGC Communication, 3301 N. Buffalo. Call 731-2227.
Event to assist flood victims
The Music for HOPE foundation will hold a benefit concert from 2-7 p.m. Saturday at Rockabilly's Night Club, 3785 Boulder Hwy.
This event is being held to raise money to assist the residents of the Miracle Mile Trailer park who have suffered damages in the recent floods. Admission will be $5. Call 880-7900.
Public invited to bring food, recipes
A "Raw, Living Food" potluck will be held 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Raw Truth Restaurant, 3620 E. Flamingo Road. People are invited to bring food cooked at below 120 degrees and copies of their recipes, along with their own plates, silverware, glasses and serving spoons. Organization plans meeting
The local chapter of Citizens for an Alternative Tax System has scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m., Aug. 9, at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave., one block east of Nellis Boulevard.
CATS is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax.
The group supports legislation currently before Congress known as The National Retail Sales Tax of 1999 (HR 2001).
Judge to teach court records class
District Judge Kathy Hardcastle will teach a court records seminar 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in the Pueblo Room.
The program, sponsored by the Clark County Bar Association, costs $20.

Conservation group offers hikes, walks
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Some coming programs:
Exploring Desert Cave -- Two-mile strenuous hike Saturday to teach how caves are formed and about the bats that reside in their blackened depths. Some crawling and rock scrambling is necessary. Gloves and long pants is suggested.
You will also need a working flashlight, water and a snack.
Talent show caps off reading program
Clark County libraries are holding a variety of special programs. Call ahead to find out which programs require pre-registration.
Whitney Crafty Cats Talent Show -- All ages can celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program with a talent show performed by the Whitney Crafty Cats at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Concert Hall at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave. Call 454-4649 for more information.
Diabetes, botulism courses scheduled
A diabetes seminar, presented by Dr. Milton Wong, an endocrinologist, is being offered 1-2 p.m. Monday.
Also being offered is the class "How to Avoid Food Poisoning and Botulism" presented by Jody Cheever, executive chef 2-3 p.m. Aug. 6 by Senior Advantage in the Valley Hospital Medical Center, 620 Shadow Lane. Call 388-4665.
