Columnist Peter Benton: Legacy marks 10th anniversary

Wednesday, July 28, 1999 | 10:22 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

As the millennium draws to a close, so does the first decade in the history of Las Vegas' Legacy Golf Club.

Ten years ago, nationally acclaimed golf course architect Arthur Hills created a challenging 18-hole layout which offers a links design combined with a blend of natural desert terrain and rugged lava outcroppings.

Since 1989, The Legacy has provided a premium golf experience for everyone from junior golfers to full field corporate events.

Throughout the years it has been an annual host to the local U.S. Open Qualifying and the American Junior Golf Association's Las Vegas Founders Tournament.

The Legacy has also received numerous awards and accolades, including being named one of Nevada's top 10 courses by Golf Digest.

Clark County residents can currently play this challenging layout for $39 any day after 11 a.m.

In August, The Legacy's Frequent Player Card (which offers local residents a reduced cardholder rate and other benefits) will go on sale.

Additionally, a complimentary O.B. Sports Passport will be available to cardholders which offers reduced rates at all O.B. layouts.

Don Barnak and Steve Olson captured the hotly contested Muirfield flight, coming in with a 60.55. Jim Thompson and Paul Kellogg followed at 60.95 with third place going to Brad Fields and Lynn Weidman at 61.15.

Troon flight victors with a 61.60 were Dennis and Adam Sabbath. Second at 63.50 was the Art Lurie-Michael Zone pairing and in third spot at 64.05 was Charles Snavely and Dick Colquitt.

Rene Raynes and Sheila Newman won the St. Andrews flight quite handily. Their score of 59.45 outdistanced the Laurie Durant-Gloria Carson twosome, who placed second with 63.80, and the pairing of Tammy Gephardt and Marlene Wheeler at 64.40.

* LIONS TOURNEY: The Las Vegas Host Lions Club has its annual charity golf tournament scheduled for Aug. 28.

Entry fee is $125 per player. The event will be played over Sun City's Highland Falls layout and all proceeds will benefit the Lions' sight conservation and general assistance projects.
