Letter: Bush will take us back in time
Tuesday, July 27, 1999 | 9:57 a.m.
If you want to see Social Security and Medicare "reformed" and "privatized" out of existence, and the 40-hour work week, paid vacations, overtime pay, minimum wage, and sick leave repealed or seriously curtailed, you should vote to keep both houses of Congress Republican and elect their lap dog, George W. Bush, as president.
Vote Republican if you want the Family and Medical Leave Act abolished, civil rights laws and voting rights laws repealed, health care to be only for the affluent, and public education destroyed.
Even if Bush is "compassionate," Tom DeLay, Dick Armey, Bob Barr, Trent Lott and Phil Gramm are not, and they will be calling the shots. You will get your wish on all those issues.
In my opinion, you can be compassionate or you can be conservative but you cannot be both. George W. Bush is just blowing smoke when claiming to be both.
How can you be compassionate when embracing privatization of Social Security, which will leave millions of current retirees holding the bag?
The reason "little Bush" will be such a pushover for the extreme element in Congress is that he really has no burning issues to address. He just wants to be president, leaving Tom DeLay and Phil Gramm to fill in the blanks.
A vote for George W. Bush is a vote to return to the 19th century as opposed to going forward to the 21st century.
