Letter: If writer is rich, where’s that Rolls?
Monday, July 26, 1999 | 9:45 a.m.
I always considered myself politically to be an "independent," but now he tells me I'm a Republican. At last I will have the pleasure of belonging to a group, and a big group at that.
The good news is that I am rich. I guess that means I can no longer drive my 1978 Pinto. I will need to buy a new car more fitting of my high place in society. Must I buy a Rolls-Royce, or will a Cadillac be ostentatious enough?
Of course I invest to fill my pockets. Why else? I have to do something to pay for the gas for the Pinto and my subscription to the Sun.
If anyone had bothered to ask me, I would favor a four-way tax cut. Increase the personal exemption and standard deduction (both of which would be of benefit to all but the rich), and make the tax rate brackets 5 percent wider and the tax rates 5 percent lower (to benefit both middle and higher income people).
