Motorcyclist's death probed by police

Police are investigating a crash in a valley intersection Friday that killed a 20-year-old motorcyclist.

Michael Archuleta was riding a 1985 Yamaha motorcycle west on Craig Road about 12:45 p.m. when a Hyundai driven by Angel Armendariz, 20, began crossing Craig at the intersection of Salmon Drive.

Archuleta could not avoid the car and skidded into the left front panel of the Hyundai, police said.

Archuleta was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition and died from his injuries at the hospital.

The cause of the accident appeared to be a right of way violation on the part of Armendariz, police said, though Armendariz has not been cited. The accident is still under investigation, police said.

Police investigate murder-suicide

Metro Police believe a man shot his ex-wife and then himself in an apartment in the northwest Las Vegas Friday.

The bodies of Rafi Sade, 50, and his 33-year-old ex-wife, Galina Sylantiev, were found shot to death about 3:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Desert Oak Court near Charleston Boulevard and Cimarron Road, police said.

Sylantiev's 14-year-old daughter found the bodies and called police. The couple had a history of domestic violence, police said. The two had been separated for about three months and Sade had left the country only to return to Las Vegas about a week ago, Lt. Wayne Petersen said.

Sade came to Sylantiev's apartment sometime after 8:45 a.m. Friday, police said, and the shootings happened sometime between when he arrived and 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters deliver baby

Las Vegas firefighters at a northwest station helped bring a new life into the world Sunday morning.

Kevin Mike was on the way to Lake Mead Hospital with mom-to-be Nicole Hovietz, when she realized the baby was going to arrive before the couple could get to the hospital. Mike headed to nearby Fire Station 9, at Rainbow Boulevard and Rancho Drive.

After pulling into the fire station's parking lot about 8:30 a.m., Mike began banging on the building's windows to bring the firefighters out, department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Two of the firefighters assisted in the delivery while others kept the new father busy, Szymanski said.

After the birth Hovietz and her new baby boy, Bullitt Blackhawk Mike, were taken to Lake Mead Hospital Medical Center by a fire department ambulance, where both are doing fine, Szymanski said.

Suspect in bar robberies arrested

Metro Police have made an arrest in connection with a series of July bar robberies.

From July 11 to 22 four valley bars were robbed by a man using an Uzi submachine gun, police said.

Henry Amarillas of North Las Vegas was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and charged with the robberies on Friday.

Police arrested Amarillas as he drove into his driveway. While searching Amarillas' car, police found the Uzi they believe was used in the robberies as well as a bag containing about $5,000 believed to have been stolen from the bars.

Durango Drive project under way

The Durango Drive improvement project began today and is scheduled to continue until the summer of 2000.

The project includes widening Durango to two travel lanes in each direction, adding a center turn lane and median island, and installing a storm drain system.

The work started today on Durango between Cheyenne Avenue and Alexander Road, and the crews will move north as they finish sections until they reach Lone Mountain Road.

Couple ID'd in murder-suicide

A couple who died in an apparent murder-suicide have been identified as Kathleen Jamieson, 49, and her husband, Jerome Jamieson, 64.

Police say Jamieson shot her husband, who was ill with cancer, and then turned the gun on herself.

Police found the bodies of the couple in their trailer in the 3000 block of Tularosa Lane near Nellis Avenue and Desert Inn Road after a friend received a letter from the couple suggesting that they had planned to take their lives.

Summerlin resort robbed of cash

The newly opened Resort at Summerlin was robbed early Sunday.

A spokesman confirmed that an unknown number of robbers took an unknown amount of cash from the hotel-casino just after midnight Sunday.

No one was injured and the police were notified, he said. Metro's robbery detail had no further information on the incident this morning.

Kids injured in bus crash

A Clark County School District bus was involved in a traffic accident this morning at the intersection of Fort Apache and Spring Mountain roads. A number of children sustained what were believed to be minor injuries, county fire department spokesmen said.

Clark County fire crews, Metro officers and district police responded to the scene of the accident. Further information about the total number of injuries and the number of vehicles involved was unavailable.
