Program launched to encourage car pools

Local transportation officials and the federal government want more car pools in the Las Vegas Valley.
Employers can take a payroll tax deduction of up to $65 per month for every employee that shares rides. Local officials have also devised a computerized system to help commuters find car pools, van pools, bus stops and bike paths close to their homes.
"We have a large number of SOVs - single occupancy vehicles - more than our roadways can handle," said Regional Transportation Commission Demand Manager Justin Schor.
"You can build the beltway and expand freeways, but at some point there's no more roadways to build. The solution is to put more people in fewer vehicles," Schor said Thursday.
