Researchers will study different pathways by which radiation could enter the body of American Indians because of different cultures and lifestyles. They will also be looking for evidence of thyroid disease, thought to be associated with radiation.

For example, American Indians may have been more affected by radiation because they have "a lot less shielding than whites, (because) they were out of doors a lot more," said Dianne Quigley, project manager from Clark University.

There also may be higher doses in American Indians because they ate the thyroids of wild game who were exposed to radiation. The research will focus on four reservations - Ely, Duckwater and Moapa reservations in Nevada and the Shivwits reservation in Utah.
