BLM's auction will be on satellite
The Bureau of Land Management is hosting its first-ever wild horse adoption via satellite next month, allowing people from all over the country to lodge bids from their living rooms.
Animals will be previewed at 8 a.m. Aug. 6 and the bidding begins at 9 a.m. The national broadcast, using an auctioneer from Superior Livestock Auctions in Fort Worth, Texas, can be viewed by tuning to band C satellite, Galaxy 3, Transponder 18.
Horses up for auction are to include 40 geldings and 40 studs with bids starting at $125 each. The sale also will include 50 pairs of mares and foals with starting bids at $250.
Bidders must obtain pre-qualification and a bid number from the BLM. In Nevada call (800) 633-6094.
FEMA swamped with phone calls
The Federal Emergency Management Agency was swamped with requests for help from Southern Nevada residents after devastating floods destroyed homes and businesses July 8-16.
FEMA set up a toll-free number Wednesday, and by 4 p.m. 312 individuals had called, FEMA spokeswoman Eliza Chan said.
The federal assessment team will begin interviewing as soon as a center of operations can open, Chan said.
People may continue calling seven days a week from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. The numbers are: (800) 462-9029 or for the hearing and speech impaired: (800) 462-7585 (TTY).
Jerbic selected to attorneys council
Las Vegas City Attorney Brad Jerbic has been selected by the Nevada League of Cities as one of its two representatives to the Advisory Council for Prosecuting Attorneys. The council is a state agency that coordinates prosecutorial efforts and provides training to Nevada's prosecutors.
Jerbic replaces Bill Andrews, the attorney for Boulder city, who was killed in an automobile accident.
