Finance director concerned room taxes not recently audited

Thursday, July 22, 1999 | 10:49 a.m.

Properties are supposed to keep track of how much they collect in room taxes and to pay it to the tourism authority.

But the RSCVA also is supposed to conduct audits from time to time and Finance Director Tim Smith said that hasn't been happening recently.

Smith told KOLO-TV he isn't criticizing his predecessors, but he calls the lack of audits troublesome.

He's quick to assure that the audits won't necessarily mean properties will be paying more.

"I think we'll find just as many properties doing things or making assumptions on their returns that would in turn result in a credit," he said.

Smith is in the process of coming up with better rules and regulations for how the convention authority does business.

He said the goal isn't to bring in more money for the tourism authority - he wants to make things fair for everyone.

Last year, the RSCVA collected $19.5 million in room taxes. That represents about 85 percent of its overall budget.
