Man found dead near downtown

A 19-year-old man was found dead early this morning in the downtown area, the victim of gunshot wounds.

An anonymous call from a downtown pay phone just after 1:30 a.m. led Metro Police and paramedics to the man, who was lying beside a bicycle path under U.S. 95 east of North 15th Street. The man had been shot several times in his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

An area resident reported hearing gunfire between 11 p.m. and midnight, but police have no witnesses to the shooting. Anyone with information about the shooting may call Metro's homicide division or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Guinn's office gets bighorn sheep

A $33,000 oil painting of a bighorn sheep, Nevada's official state mammal , now graces the wall in the office of Gov. Kenny Guinn -- donated by the artist Gail Adams.

The painting, titled "Rock Boy," was presented to Guinn in a ceremony Tuesday. Adams, a wildlife artist who lives in Saskatchewan, took 12 weeks to complete the work, which shows the animal "confident in his ability to deal with whatever comes his way," she said.

Guinn said "Rock Boy" exudes "strength" that symbolizes Nevada.

The painting is named after her agents' company, Rockboy Productions.

BLM offers trips to explain plans

The Bureau of Land Management will be holding field trips into Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to better acquaint citizens with the agency's proposed general management plan.

The trips will view the southern portions of Red Rock along either side of the highway. Issues to be discussed will include wild horses and burros, impacts on springs and riparian areas, commercial tours on back roads, vegetation, trails, use conflicts and water sources.

The two field trips are scheduled for Aug. 4 and Aug. 7. Participants need to meet at the Red Rock Canyon fee station parking lot at 8 a.m.

The trips will last between five and six hours, and participants are asked to bring a sack lunch, water and hiking gear. High clearance four-wheel drive vehicles and car pooling is also recommended.
