Letter: Buildings must withstand weather

Monday, July 19, 1999 | 9:59 a.m.

I lived in the Midwest most of my life. No doubt others who migrated to our valley could have lived in the East and South. Surely there were many rains experienced in some of these prior areas, as well as lots of snow! Did walls and streets collapse? Did homes flood? I don't think so.

Is it simply assumed that since such treacherous weather does not occur as frequently in the West that it gives those who construct the opportunity to erect less stable properties? This must be evident because of the current lawsuits filed by homeowners associations against their builders over construction defects. Shouldn't our city and county officials have the opportunity to go after the companies who must be guilty of poor construction?

My heart goes out to those who have lost so much ... too much!

I do admit to being a big believer in insurance coverage. In spite of premiums perhaps being too costly for many, they should be realistic, as is now evident because of people's unfortunate losses.

It is true that properties cost less in the West, but in the long run is it worth it to pay less initially only to suffer financial consequences if serious situations are to occur?

Incidentally, here's hoping, as does our great new Mayor Oscar Goodman, that this current horrible experience will enable the merging of the city and county. It's time. Surely they realize why.
