CARSON CITY -- A Reno woman has started a petition drive asking for a federal investigation of the state Ethics Commission, which she accuses of repeatedly violating the law.
Laura Link said today she has not been able to get any state officials to look into what she considers illegal actions of the commission and now wants U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno to start an inquiry.
She said the commission has unjustly persecuted its only employee, Lee Ann Keever, whose job was abolished by the Legislature. Link said she was a friend of Keever and had appeared on her behalf before the ethics commission.
Keever's job ends this week but she has filed a lawsuit against the commission, charging it has ignored the law in its handling of cases. The civil action is pending. Link said the Keever lawsuit is proof of the extent of the "improprieties" of the commission, which include the issuance of illegal subpoenas during the past two years.
