Letter: After tobacco, gun manufacturers, aim at alcoholic drinks
Sunday, July 18, 1999 | 11:11 a.m.
It is about time a similar look is taken at the alcohol beverage industry. The impact the alcoholic beverage industry has on our health system and economy is far greater. It is time we as a nation look at the impact of this scourge.
One must start with the impact on the family of a typical alcohol abuser. Much of it starts with violence in the home, spreads to lost income because of costs of the beverage, lost work and wages, insurance cost, property damage, etc.
From the family it spreads to the community, industry and finally to all of society. Alcoholism adds to the problems of depression, dementia, and contributes to Alzheimer's and other mental problems. Why do we spend so much money on the "War on Drugs," when the worse drug of all is alcohol?
It is time for action.
