Course teaches about starting a business
The Las Vegas chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives will present its next "Starting a New Business" workshop at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Showboat hotel-casino.
SCORE counselors will cover marketing, cash flow, record keeping, the business plan and a check list for licensing, permits and other requirements. Cost is $30 if prepaid or $35 at the door. Call 388-6104.
Free hikes, walks educational tools
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Some coming programs:
Ancient Ones -- Early-morning hike Monday through Lost Creek to discuss the historic past of Red Rock Canyon.
Desert Kitchen and Pharmacy -- Two-mile moderate hike into the Lost Creek-Willow Springs area for 8-year-olds to adults to discover how the land provided both food and medicine for native people of the region.
Masculine, feminine energy topic of class
The Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence, through St. Rose Dominican Hospital, will offer a class on Masculine and Feminine Energy from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite 140, Henderson.
Nick Berar, founder and director of Your Choice workshops and seminars, will examine the hidden assumptions that create conflicts and distance between the sexes. Call 914-7060.
Palliative Care Institute opens shop
Nathan Adelson Hospice recently started a new palliative care program designed to improve patients' end of life through education and research.
Care includes making patients comfortable, providing relief of symptoms and integrating spiritual and psychosocial concerns into treatment.
The hospice's Palliative Care Institute will provide assistance with education for the public and medical community.
Center to improve assistants' skills
The Nevada Chiropractor's Assistant Training Center is scheduled to open July 26 to provide educational skills for anyone interested in pursuing a chiropractic career.
The school, on 4925 Craig Road, will train chiropractic assistants. It will offer a 250-hour study course covering a variety of topics. Call 656-7460.
Special programs open to public
Clark County libraries are holding a variety of special programs. Call ahead to find out which programs require pre-registration.
Parachute Play -- Ages 2-5 are invited to sing and play with Gymboree at 1 p.m. Monday. Tie Dyeing -- Ages 10 and older can learn the art of tie dyeing at 6:30 p.m. July 23. Both programs will be held at the Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive.
Summer Film Feast -- All ages can enjoy an indoor drive-in at 6:30 Tuesday at the Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave. Enjoy movies based on books.
Reading Is A Fine "Funny" Art -- Ages 6 and older can enjoy this two-part program creating fun reading through cartoons and riddles and jokes at 2 p.m. July 21 and 28. Behind The Scenes -- Ages 8 and older can grab a backstage pass to a scenic view of theater games and unravel the plot to some fun stories at 2 p.m. July 22 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
Senior sing-a-long at Sunset Station
Sunrise Senior Friends-Green Valley is sponsoring a "Summertime Sing-a-long" from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Sunset Station hotel-casino, Club Madrid. Call 434-6500.
Area benefits from telethon
The local broadcast of the Children's Miracle Network Telethon in June raised more than $552,000 -- a new record. Some of the money will be used to buy pediatric care equipment at University Medical Center. A portion of the money will also be set aside for an endowment fund. Nationally, the telethon raised more than $192 million.
Group surpasses fund-raising goal
The United Way of Southern Nevada has announced that its annual campaign exceeded its $9.3 million goal. More than $9.4 million was raised for more than 45 charities and programs -- an increase of $1.1 million over last year's campaign.
