Porter may run for Berkley’s congressional seat
Wednesday, July 14, 1999 | 10:57 a.m.
With Republican state Sen. Mark James deciding not to take a shot at Democrat Shelley Berkley's congressional seat next year, fellow Republican state Sen. Jon Porter will "give it real serious consideration."
Porter, who was in Reno today to meet with his son to discuss what the impact of winning a seat in the House of Representatives will have on his family, said he spoke with James on Tuesday and was "offered his total support."
"I will give it real serious consideration over the next few weeks," Porter said. "Right now, it is a family decision. I have talked about it with my wife and will be getting input from other members of my family." Porter also is a district manager for Farmers Insurance Co.
James, who never announced his candidacy but was considered the front-runner for the GOP slot, cited family reasons for not running for the job that requires a representative to spend much of the year in Washington.
