Funnel cloud touches down near Sparks
Wednesday, July 14, 1999 | 9:30 a.m.
The National Weather Service said no damage was reported from the twister that touched down around 5 p.m. Tuesday in an open area near Lockwood.
A lightning strike also sparked a grass fire south of Reno near the Mount Rose Highway, but it was quickly extinguished.
The storm brought a reprieve from the sizzling heat that has dominated the Truckee Meadows and much of northern Nevada for the past week.
Forecasters said temperatures should be slightly cooler through the weekend, with highs in the upper 80s.
