Extortion attempt, bomb threat closes Reno grocery store

Wednesday, July 14, 1999 | 2:44 a.m.

The call to the Albertson's store on Keystone Avenue and Fifth Street was made around 10 a.m., police said.

The caller advised employees to bring money outside to a specific location or a bomb would go off in the store.

Bomb experts evacuated the building and searched the store. Police said a suspicious device was found in a small box, and though it looked real, it turned out to be a hoax and did not pose a threat.

Employees were allowed back inside around noon.

Police had no immediate suspects. An investigation continued.
