Commissioners look for ways to save Mapes Hotel

Commissioners on Tuesday authorized a feasibility study to determine if the building could be renovated for county office space.
The 51-year-old Mapes was listed last year by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the 11 most endangered historic sites in the country.
Developers had proposed turning the building into time-share units, but they were unable to come up with adequate financing.
City leaders have set a Sept. 13 deadline for groups interested in saving the Mapes to present their proposals.
