Anderes named interim chancellor

Vice Chancellor of Finance & Planning Tom Anderes received a standing ovation Tuesday after the university system regents voted unanimously to name him interim chancellor to replace Richard Jarvis.
Jarvis, who did not attend the special meeting, is leaving Aug. 31.
Anderes' appointment came as no surprise. He is a highly respected member of the University and Community College System of Nevada's administrative staff and his name surfaced quickly when Jarvis made his surprise resignation announcement July 1.
"I feel very positive," Anderes said. "I think there is a lot of potential in terms of where the board is going."
He said there are many exciting undertakings ahead for him and the board, including the study for a proposed state college in Henderson as well as planning for the biennial budget.
Board members were not as concerned about a quick search for a new chancellor as they were about a search for a new direction.
Before they look for a new leader, the regents said they want to determine what their own goals are and how they are going to relate to the next chancellor and how the chancellor will relate to them.
"The role of the chancellor changes with the nature of the times and the nature of the board," University of Nevada, Reno President Joe Crowley said. "You need to define the role to suit the times."
Regent Steve Sisolak has been one of Jarvis' harshest critics and after Anderes' appointment attempted to torpedo trips to two conventions Jarvis plans to attend next week.
The attempt failed.
Sisolak said he was thrilled with Anderes.
"He's easy to communicate with. He's extremely responsive and accessible and knowledgeable," Sisolak said.
Anderes will receive a 15 percent pay increase, from $153,500 to $176,500. He also will receive a $6,000 car allowance and a $12,000 housing allowance so that he can have a residence in Las Vegas and Reno.
"This is a good decision on the part of the board. It's going to be a good year," Chairwoman Jill Derby said.
After agreeing to make Anderes interim chancellor, the board also voted to extend his contract as vice chancellor to three years. It was due to expire in a year.
