Police probe rare event: homicide in Summerlin

Monday, July 12, 1999 | 10:45 a.m.

A shooting in Summerlin left a 20-year-old man dead Friday night in what is believed to be the first homicide in the northwest Las Vegas neighborhood in five years.

At 8:10 p.m. two cars came to a stop back-to-back at the intersection of Summerlin Parkway and Rampart Drive. A man jumped out of the rear car, ran up to the front car and fired at least 10 shots into the passenger side, Metro Police said.

Both the 20-year-old passenger in the front seat and the 19-year-old passenger in the back seat were shot. The 20-year-old driver drove the car to a friend's house nearby, police said.

The man in the front seat, identified as Deangelo Jackson, 20, of North Las Vegas was dead when police arrived at the friend's house, and the 19-year-old in the back seat was taken to University Medical Center where he was treated and released for a gunshot wound to the leg. The driver was not injured.

The shooter jumped back into his car, which sped away on North Rampart Boulevard, police said. A traffic officer, unaware of the shooting, chased the car until the three passengers abandoned the vehicle and fled, police said.

Police arrested Adam Aguilar, 22, Ismael Vargas, 19, and Eliodoro Cabrera, 20, on charges of murder with a deadly weapon in the vicinity of Vegas and Buffalo drives.

Detectives believe that all of the involved parties knew each other before the shooting. Police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the three arrested men and one of the victims over some property.

Summerlin enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in the county, according to crime statistics. The last homicide Detective Wayne Petersen said he could remember in the area occurred in 1994.
