Libraries and schools get $5.3 million for Internet links

The Schools and Libraries Universal Service Program was established as part of the U.S. Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Applicants must submit a technology plan to show how the money will be spent. In addition to Internet access and internal connections, the money also can be used to upgrade old wiring in buildings.

Here's a summary showing funds for several counties:

-Clark:schools, $3.2 million; libraries, $98,120.

-Washoe:schools, $494,641; libraries, $19,259.

-Elko:schools, $1 million; libraries, $7,205.

-Carson City:schools, $88,228; libraries, $0.

-Churchill:schools, $93,958; libraries, $1,529.

-Douglas:schools, $33,886; libraries, $3,157.

-Humboldt:schools, $30,962; libraries, $2,578.

-White Pine:schools, $12,757; libraries.
