Veggie Garden secrets shared

"Plan Your Cool Season Veggie Garden" is offered at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Desert Demonstration Gardens, 3701 W. Alta Drive. Master Gardener Clarita Huffman will share secrets for growing a plentiful harvest this fall and winter.

Texas representative is guest speaker

The Nevada Republican Liberty Caucus will have Texas state Rep. Suzana Gratia Hupp as guest speaker at its monthly breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the Country Inn in Green Valley. Tickets are $25. For reservations, call 454-0350.

Variety of programs to be offered

Clark County libraries are holding a variety of special programs. Call ahead to find out which programs require pre-registration.

The Desert Arts Brass Quintet musicians will perform solo pieces on each instrument of the brass family and then as a group at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Call 733-3616.

Color Your World Beautiful -- Preschoolers can follow Harold in his adventure with his purple crayon and join in the colorful fun of the mice in Mouse Paint at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Also Make Mine Mime -- School-age and young adults can try your hand at mime under the direction of Andrea Sweet at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both programs will be held at the Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Call 382-2003.

Bonanza High student gets highest award

Anne Sondeno, a senior and valedictorian from Bonanza High School, was awarded Point Loma Nazarene University's highest academic award, the Honor Scholarship, which is equivalent to a half-tuition scholarship.

Two local students among 251 recipients

Heather Rampton, a senior at Las Vegas Academy of International Studies and Thuy Nguyen, a senior at Clark High School, are two of 251 high school seniors from across the United States benefiting from a scholarship for college from Coca-Cola Bottlers and The Coca-Cola Company.

Three nurses named Rose Awards finalists

Three nurses at Lake Mead Hospital Medical Center have been named finalists in the Rose Awards presented by the Professional Black Woman's Alliance.

They are: Shirley Bermudez, operating room director; Betty Butler, nutritional services director and Jacqueline Pringle, intensive care unit director.

The Professional Black Women's Alliance is a nonprofit organization that has been consistent in providing seminar and workshops for young women in the Las Vegas community.

Durango student represents state

Waratta Chimphalee, a Durango High School student, traveled to Washington, D.C., last week as the state winner of the 18th annual Congressional Art Contest.

Chimphalee's work will join that of other student-artists in the Cannon tunnel, which leads to the U.S. Capitol.

Each member of the House of Representatives selected one entry to represent his or her district in the exhibition.

Chimphalee was accompanied by her art teacher, Linda Baker, and two other student-participants, Amalia Groebe and Nic Mora.
