‘American Pie’ heats up No.1 spot at the box office

The gross-out comedy knocked the sci-fi western out of the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office with $18.7 million in ticket sales.
"Wild Wild West" lost nearly 40 percent of its audience in its second week, earning $16.8 million.
The terrorism thriller "Arlington Road," the week's only other new film in wide release, opened in sixth place with $7.5 million.
The top 10 movies at North American theaters Friday through Monday, followed by distributing studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. and ACNielsen EDI Inc.:

5. "The General's Daughter," Paramount, $7.9 million, 2,710 locations, $2,926 average, $79.1 million, four weeks.
6. "Arlington Road," Sony, $7.5 million, 1,631 locations, $4,608 average, $7.5 million, one week.
7. "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," 20th Century Fox, $7.4 million, 2,447 locations, $3,061 average, $385.1 million, eight weeks.
8. "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut," Paramount, $7 million, 2,128 locations, $3,319 average, $35.5 million, two weeks.
