Letter: Clinton trying to help the poor
Sunday, July 11, 1999 | 9:25 a.m.
The Republican members of Congress, for example, are silent on the problems. They are too busy figuring out how to get more tax breaks for the rich. Meanwhile, the rich-poor gap keeps growing. As President Clinton pointed out in Hazard, Ky., the other day: "Even though this is a blessed time for America, not all Americans have been blessed by it."
President Clinton's proposal to spend some federal money to provide businesses and jobs in blighted areas is a sound one when we have a surplus to finance the projects. It is certainly a better and fairer economic policy for all the people than giving capital gains reduction and other tax breaks for the wealthy, who don't need it.
