Lottery improves to compete with casinos

DETROIT -- Michigan Lottery officials project the state games will lose $60 million in sales in the first year after Detroit's temporary casinos open.

So they're proposing changes to liven up the lottery in order to entice players from slot machines.

Officials are talking about a weekly rollover jackpot in the popular Cash 5 game that would greatly exceed the maximum payout of $100,000 now offered, perhaps surpassing $500,000, the Detroit News reported.

Also proposed is a new Las Vegas-style keno game in which games would be played every seven minutes or so instead of just once a day. And lottery officials want to hold drawings on Sundays, a plan rejected in the past by the Legislature.

"The casinos are going to be competition," State Lottery Commissioner Don Gilmer told the News. "As for magic answers, we don't have them now. We hope the novelty of casinos will wear off and we hope they get non-lottery players as customers."
