Fishing report - Las Vegas area - July 7, 1999

LAKE MEAD: Hot weather and mediocre fishing were found by the large crowd on hand at the recreation area for Independence Day weekend.

Striped bass fishing has been fair for shore anglers at the Pyramid Island causeway. Boaters are still catching stripers in front of Hemenway Harbor and at Las Vegas Wash.

Some action for stripers has been reported by boaters trolling from Fish Island to the Virgin Bowl. Stripers are also being caught in the early morning hours while drifting bait in Iceberg Canyon.

With the hot weather and large crowds, few largemouth bass anglers have been seen on the water.

Before the weekend bass fishing was good with the fish moving toward deep water and being caught along cliff walls.

LAKE MOHAVE: Rainbow trout plants that took place late last week have produced good fishing at Willow Beach. There have been reports of large striped bass being caught by boaters in that area, including one that weighed 23 pounds.

A veteran angler reported that he hooked an extremely large striper while trolling early Friday morning between the 52 and 53 mile markers. He failed to bring the fish to the boat as the line broke following a several-minute fight.

Small stripers are being caught by trolling bait near Owl's Point. Fish in that area generally range from one to two pounds.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: A lake-record largemouth bass was caught Saturday by Terry Bird of Pioche. The fish weighed eight pounds, four ounces and measured 23 3/4 inches with a girth of 17 3/4 inches. It was caught while trolling a spinnerbait near the dam.

Trout fishing continues to be fair in the Lincoln County state park. A few crappie and a number of small largemouth bass have appeared in the catch during the past week.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Anglers are continuing to enjoy fair action for stocked rainbow trout. Aquatic weeds are something of a problem but are not yet too severe to inhibit shore fishing.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Trout fishing has been slow while the action for largemouth bass has been fair around sunrise and sunset at Adams-McGill and Haymeadow reservoirs.

Crank baits and spinners worked near brush have been the tickets to catching the bass.
