UNLV softball to scrimmage Dixie
Friday, Jan. 29, 1999 | 10:16 a.m.
The 1999 edition of the UNLV softball team will take the field Saturday to face Dixie College in a preseason scrimmage.
The game is set for noon Saturday at the Rebel Diamond on the campus of UNLV.
UNLV returns 12 letterwinners from last year's squad and has starting players returning in eight of the nine positions. The Rebels will also benefit from a revamped pitching crew, as three recruits will join Danielle Ferreira, the only starting pitcher returning from last season's squad.
Leading the team this year is Raven Coberg, who just last month was drafted in the sixth round of the Women's Professional Softball League by the Akron Racers. Coberg was second on the team last season with a .310 batting average and eight home runs.
Other key returners include junior Nicole Miller and sophomore Racheal Goodpaster, two starters who made a significant impact in the Rebel lineup last season. Miller is expected to start for her third straight year in center field, while Goodpaster was a constant at shortstop throughout last season and will likely be there again this year.
The Rebels' regular season kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 6 when they face Southern Utah in a doubleheader at noon. UNLV will look to improve on its record of 21-30 overall and 13-19 sixth-place conference finish in 1998.
