Plan would give LV Valley new gasoline in winter

The Clark County Health District approved two public hearings Thursday to discuss a proposal that would bring cleaner burning winter gasoline into Southern Nevada.
Gasoline currently sold in the county produces 114 parts per million of sulfur and 35 parts of aromatic hydrocarbons per million parts of gasoline. The proposed fuel would only produce 40 parts per million of sulfur and 25 parts per million of aromatic hydrocarbons.
The cleaner fuel would reduce air pollution levels by about 10 percent, said Michael Naylor, director of the county Air Pollution Division.
Public hearings will be conducted at 8 a.m. March 25 and April 22 at the Health District, 625 Shadow Lane.
If approved, Naylor said the gasoline would probably cost between 2 and 4 cents more per gallon and be available in November.
The board also gave the committee investigating inhalable particles in the air more authority to study sources of pollution including vacant land not under construction and unpaved roads.
Naylor said the committee is currently studying various areas of possible dust pollution including covered stockpiles of dirt, ways dust sprays are used on unpaved roads, tree coverage on vacant land, whether dump trucks are being covered during transportation of dirt, etc..
