Brief: City, gamers agree on casino locations

Friday, Jan. 29, 1999 | 11:57 a.m.

The City Council is to consider the deal today. Gambling companies and the city had negotiated for months over the estimated price for the Rivertown site. If its costs had exceeded $250 million, the city could have opted to move the $1.8 billion casino complex elsewhere.

The next step is land condemnation, which could drag on for months if property owners decide to challenge it.

The deal means the casino developers will now proceed with construction of their temporary casinos.

"This was a huge hurdle to overcome," said Tom Shields, spokesman for the Atwater-Circus Circus partnership. The other casino developers are MGM Grand Inc. of Las Vegas and the local Atwater group.

The city is seeking funding to build a waterfront park in front of the casinos, stretching to the Renaissance Center.
