Letter: Going by facts, Clinton is guilty

Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 | 11:08 a.m.

When the president campaigned for office he ran on a platform that included strengthening civil rights and more stringent sexual harassment laws. After his election, he signed into law the Independent Counsel Act and sexual harassment legislation.

The independent counsel must depend upon the cooperation and agreement of the attorney general, the Justice Department and a three-judge panel for authority to expand his investigation. He was given the authority to investigate the Paula Jones case and Monica Lewinsky incident.

The president, as the chief legal officer of America, a lawyer and the defendant in the Paula Jones case, then lied in a civil deposition, denying justice to Paula Jones. He won the election by fraudulent means by promising justice and then subverting it as a defendant.

He then compounded his deceit by lying to a federal grand jury, obstructing and delaying the independent counsel investigation.

Although he was elected twice by the American people he was not forthright when he campaigned and he won through fraudulent means. As president he has violated the very laws he legislated and signed into law.

It is now up to the Senate, as the more deliberate body, to come to a just and fair decision based on the facts, not partisanship.
