Parents of a disabled child have filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Clark County School District and the state Department of Education claiming that special-education services were not provided for their son with Down Syndrome under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act.
The parents, William and Donna Wolfbrandt, filed the lawsuit Thursday on behalf of their 4-year-old son, Billy. They said their son was being denied a proper education by not being mainstreamed into a normal classroom setting.
Ray Willis, spokesman for the district, said he could not comment specifically on the lawsuit, but added that the district provides services that are required by law.
He said an interdisciplinary team of experts evaluates each special education child before establishing a curriculum, and sometimes parents want services that are beyond what the district is required to provide.
