Two medical clinics subject to FBI search

Friday, Jan. 15, 1999 | 11:47 a.m.

FBI agents -- in association with the attorney general's office, Department of Labor and Internal Revenue Service -- searched two area medical clinics late Thursday afternoon.

The Isla Verde Medical Center, 1845 Civic Center Drive in North Las Vegas, was raided at 6:40 p.m. The center is owned by Dr. Alfonso Ortiz, an endocrinologist.

The other center at 701 E. Charleston Blvd. was searched earlier Thursday afternoon. The center was operated by Ortiz and Dr. William Alver, but they left the business over a year ago.

The Charleston center does not have a business license, said Jim Difore, division manager for Las Vegas business licensing.

The state Board of Medical Examiners was not involved in the ongoing investigation. According to board records, Ortiz has never had any disciplinary or malpractice action taken against him.

Nancy Schuster, the FBI's chief counsel for Nevada, said two federal search warrants were executed and they remain sealed. No arrests were made.

Ortiz has owned the North Las Vegas business since September 1996.
