Traffic-ticket moratorium pays off with response topping previous year

Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999 | 10:26 a.m.

The Las Vegas Municipal Court's moratorium over the holidays on penalties for late traffic tickets generated three times as much money as it had in previous years.

The moratorium, which ran from Nov. 16 to Dec. 31, resulted in $279,687 in fines being paid compared with $89,061 in 1997, the court reported this week.

A total of 3,255 defendants resolved 5,611 cases. In 1997, 1,007 defendants resolved 1,080 cases.

Each defendant paid an average of $85.93 in fines. The moratorium enabled defendants to pay their traffic fines without having to pay warrant fees of up to $300.

The busiest day of the moratorium was Dec. 31 -- when 732 defendants resolved their cases and paid $30,068 in fines.
