Moutain West Conference unveils logo

Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999 | 10:12 a.m.

The Mountain West Conference finally has an image to go with its name.

The neophyte league consisting of UNLV, Air Force, Colorado State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming unveiled its logo Wednesday.

The logo, which was four months in development, has a black, purple and grey/silver color scheme showing a jagged set of peaks in the background with the "Mountain" name emblazoned across with the word "West" directly underneath, in smaller type.

At first glance, the Mountain West's look has elements of the Colorado Rockies baseball team's logo, especially the mountains in the background.

"We were trying to capture the elements of the geographic nature that would capture the name 'Mountain West,' " said R&R Advertising vice president Rob Dondero, whose firm designed the logo. "We had some revisions in it. We had a sun in some of the logos and some different color schemes.

"But I think purple is a good choice. When you look at the color schemes of the other conferences, it should stand out."
