Jailed burglar suspect in rape of girl, 12

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999 | 11:29 a.m.

A convicted burglar in custody in California is the suspect in the rape of a 12-year-old Las Vegas girl last summer, Metro Police said.

Paul Haskell Spicher, 38, a twice-convicted felon, is being held in Fort Bragg, Calif., on vandalism charges. He is awaiting extradition to Nevada on sex assault charges.

Metro Sexual Assault Section Lt. Tom Monahan said that fingerprints found at the home of the rape victim led them to Spicher. The incident took place July 15 in the home near Washington Avenue and Jones Boulevard. The 12-year-old girl was baby-sitting her 3-year-old sister when a man knocked on the door and asked for directions. About 20 minutes later, he returned, asking for a drink of water and the use of the phone, police said.

Monahan said the man then forced his way inside and ordered the 3-year-old to stay in the bathroom. He then tied up the 12-year-old and sexually assaulted her, police said..
