Daughter of Patrick McCarran dies at 94
Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999 | 9:55 a.m.
Sister McCarran, whose father was U.S. Sen. Pat McCarran, died a few hours before 1999 began at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos, Calif.
She was born in 1904 and spent much of her childhood together with two sisters and one brother on family-owned ranches in Nevada where she was exposed to nature and the McCarran pioneering spirit.
In 1923, she and one of her sisters entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of the Holy Names in Oakland, Calif. She took her religious vows in 1926.
She held degrees in music and political science and earned a doctorate in history with a political science minor from Catholic University in 1952. She was a teacher in California for 23 years, before returning to Nevada.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Sparks Thursday at 11 a.m.
