10-year-old girl killed in skiing accident

The girl, whose name wasn't immediately released, was sking down an intermediate run with her family on the California side of the Heavenly Ski Resort when she lost control and hit a tree, said El Dorado County sheriff's deputies.

She was flown by Careflight helicopter to Barton Memorial Hospital here, where she was pronounced dead about an hour after the 10 a.m. accident.

Ski patrol members tried to revive the girl at the scene, but she never regained consciousness, deputies said. The girl was not wearing a helmet and died of head injuries.

An investigation into the accident was continuing.
