March 9 hearing set for convicted U-Haul killer

Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 | 2:38 a.m.

Calambro has said he wants to die for the January 1994 killings of two Reno U-Haul workers.

But his mother, Lydia Calambro, is trying to intervene on his behalf. She says her son is mentally incompetent to decide if he wants to waive further appeals of his death sentence and die by lethal injection.

The Nevada Supreme Court has already upheld Calambro's conviction and sentence and rejected Lydia Calambro's petition. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld those actions this week when it refused, without comment, to hear the appeal.

The case now reverts back to U.S. District Judge Howard McKibben, who heard testimony on Calambro's mental state last year but delayed the case until proceedings in the state court system were complete.

Calambro and his cohort, Duc Huynh, were convicted of killing Peggy Crawford and Keith Christopher during a robbery at the U-Haul business from which Huynh had been fired.

Huynh also was sentenced to die but hanged himself in prison.
