Letter: GOP has stood behind little guy
Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 | 12:08 p.m.
Just a few of the items are:
1. We participated in balancing the budget.
2. We gave dignity back to the "little guy" by spearheading welfare reform. Following is a quote from Rudolph Giuliani in the Wall Street Journal, "It is one of the ironies of modern political history that people who defend the old welfare system are commonly described as 'progressive.' There's nothing progressive about encouraging dependency on the government, or about policies that cause people to lose the basic ability to take care of themselves and their families."
3. We fought against the unions who are taking money out of their members' paychecks without their permission and use it to fight Republicans. Incidentally, 40 percent of union members nationally are Republicans. Don't you think they would rather buy sneakers for their children with their money?
4. We are continually fighting for tax reduction. The benefits for tax reduction go 93 percent to the working guy and 7 percent to the upper income taxpayers. Sen. Robert Torricelli from New Jersey said in the Feb. 2 Wall Street Journal that "tax burdens on working families are at record lows for recent decades."
I rest my case.
