The Horned Frogs (18-8, 6-6) had four players score in double figures. Lee Nailon had 16 points and 16 rebounds for TCU while Vladimir Jaksic added 16 points and Ryan Carroll scored 12.
Shawn Marion had 34 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Rebels (15-10, 8-4). Kevin Simmons added 15 points and Mark Dickel added 11 assists.
Neither team led by more than five points in the game. The Horned Frogs had a 71-67 lead with 2:06 left, but Donovan Stewart followed a missed shot with a layup to pull the Rebels to within two with 1:45 left.
The teams traded turnovers before Gainous hit two free throws to put TCU up 73-69 with 31 seconds remaining.
Marion made his fifth 3-pointer of the game to pull UNLV within one, 73-72, with 24 seconds remaining. Prince Fowler hit two free throws for TCU to give the Horned Frogs a 75-72 lead.
Brian Keefe missed on 3-point shot attempt with 3 seconds left that would have tied the game for UNLV. Keefe was 0-of-9 on 3-pointers for the game.
Gainous grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made one of two to seal the victory.
